Like all 17-year-olds, Molly Porter had never heard of the Filicide Program. She learned its name the day her parents tried to murder her. On that day, every parent in her secluded, North Carolina beach town conspired to kill their own children, and many of Molly’s friends did not survive the night.

But what is the Filicide Program? How could an entire community of loving mothers and fathers turn on their own in a day? And why?

These questions will haunt Molly as she scrambles to keep her two younger brothers—and herself—safe from the two people she thought would always be on her side no matter what. Her mom and dad have "switched," and now they will never stop hunting her. Either she must kill her parents or they will kill her, unless…

Unless Molly stays alive long enough to unravel this conspiracy and answer the most important question of all

How do you stop the Filicide Program?

Filicide edition by Daniel Zellar Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

If you fancy dark, young adult works similar to The Hunger Games or Scream films, you’d find this enjoyable. The concept is more twisted than Hunger Games, in my humble opinion. Instead of kids being forced to fight each other to the death, they’re being hunted down by their own parents and what’s worse is they don’t know why. It’s either kill or be killed, but no one wants to kill their own parent so can Molly discover what the secret is and save the day?

She’s a fantastic central character. Molly is strong and smart and easy to relate with. Her parents are divorced and her mom has remarried, which added another layer of intrigue because normally she hates her stepdad and loves her biological dad, only now he’s trying to kill her.

My chief complaint is that the story is too short. The ending isn’t a cliffhanger, but it raises a huge question to tease you. I’d never dock the book a star for that since it’s obviously intentional, but I dislike it when authors do so. I am ready for more now.

Filicide edition by Daniel Zellar Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I learned of this title thanks to my own North Carolina connections, so I decided to take a chance on it even though it has but a small number of reviews at this point. Boy am I glad I did so! While I enjoyed the setting on the NC coast immensely (and it certainly stirred some homesickness in me), there was a great deal more to it than my interest in the setting.

Simply put this is an extremely fun, engrossing book, a classic thriller that is very-well executed. It gets off to a fast start and there is not a dull page in it; it keeps you turning pages right up to the very last. It was well balanced and paced, and the prose was relaxed and polished to an unexpected degree for what appears to be an early/first work. There was some subtle humor woven throughout, some extremely vivid passages that elevated things, and of course a plot and pace that just drove things.

If fact, I finished it the same afternoon I started it, as it compelled me to keep reading rather than put it down. I would read more from this author in a heartbeat, so I will definitely keep an eye out for new titles. Read this title and you will not be disappointed.
Pros fast-paced, solid action, great story idea, downright frightening at times

Cons not much character development for minor characters, could have spent more time explaining a few plot secrets as they’re revealed

Overall it’s a fascinating story idea that’s not for everyone, but if you can stomach kids having to defend themselves from their parents, you’re in for fun. You’d think it’d get repetitive after a while, but Zellar kept things fresh by adding new wrinkles every so often. I was surprised more than once by where he took the story. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn he’s a pseudonym for an already successful author. From the plotting alone, you know he’s done this before, but there’s nothing on the Internet about him.
Extremely frustrating read, in the best possible way. Zellar has created one of the most chilling opening scenes I've ever read, and from then on the book is fantastic. I read thrillers, and FILICIDE is a GREAT thriller, with a roller-coaster ride that kept me reading until I had finished it in one sitting. No spoilers, because it wouldn't be fair, but I will say that Zellar throws a terrific McGuffin into the story about one-third of the way through that will keep you chewing on your thumbnail as you read.

In so many ways, this is a perfect summer read (although I read it in the midst of the January Snowfall of 2016 and loved it!).

So what's the frustration?

Zellar doesn't develop the story enough, for whatever reason, and so the ending is too abrupt. The reader is left hanging (although there is enough plot resolution to prevent aggrieved readers from throwing their Fire s across their studies, THOUGH JUST BARELY ENOUGH RESOLUTION, ZELLAR!). Why, oh why, can he not revisit FILICIDE and made it into what it cries to be? The first book in a series, a la Clive Cussler or Eric Van Lustbader or. . . well, you (and hopefully Zellar, who writes better than both of those mentioned) get the idea.

It's short, but FILICIDE will pack a punch. And probably disturb your sleep!
Very good! For a first (published) work, it's fantastic. Full disclosure -- I bought this when it was on sale for $.99. Before I'll buy any book whose author I'm not familiar with, I open it and read the first chapter or so, see if it grabs me. The first chapter of Filicide is an irresistible hook, and the rest of the book doesn't disappoint. The characters are strong, well drawn, and behave (for the most part) believably and intelligently. No group of teens hiding behind the wall of chain saws, etc. The main protagonist, Molly, reacts believably to the situation, including moments of disbelief and rationalization that's entirely realistic, particularly for her age. If she's a bit too strong and recovers a bit too fast to her beloved father's first unprovoked murderous attack, the author makes this believable by her excellent physical condition as a daily surfer and a certain mental toughness that is fully tested during the book's events. I won't spoil the twists and turns as the story plays out, or the explanation of how the filicide program came to be (which, to be honest, is the only thing about the book that's a bit hard to believe). The end leaves Molly in a bad situation that's not resolved, setting us up for the coming sequel, which I'll certainly buy. Heck, I won't even wait until it's on sale. Bravo, Mr. Zellar! Encore!
