'The Rafters, book one of the Somnambulist Saga', takes place in another world where beings called Messengers & Callings exist. The Plot surrounds a young man named Rhyus Delmar who is unaware of his destiny as a Calling. In his pursuit to discover his true identity, Rhyus inadvertently finds himself moving further away from his own Messenger- the only person who has the knowledge to bring him to his true destiny. Along this journey, he must also discern his dreams from reality.

Rhyus' actions draw him closer into the hands of an obscure underworld that desires to discover & obtain Rhyus' powers to their own benefit.

Unlike most novels, the path the characters walk isn't as black & white as it may seem, but in actuality is as complex of a journey for the reader as it is for the characters who live within the book.

I really enjoyed reading "The Rafters," by A.C. Montgomery and Alyssa Lund. This promises to be a terrific new fantasy series. The characters are well-developed and interesting, as they move between worlds of light and darkness. The story is complex, told from multiple viewpoints, to draw the reader in to want to learn more about the people and places in the story. The maps of characters and places included in the book were beneficial to use while I was reading. I am very much looking forward to the next book in the series: "The Exile."

The Rafters Book I of The Somnambulist Saga AC Montgomery 9780982922309 Books Reviews

I really enjoyed this book. The story is complex but readily followed. The characters develop well and mysteries unfold. The world AC Montogomery creates is great fun to explore and think about. I can't wait for the next book in the series.
I really liked this book. It is the first fantasy type book that I've read. I was pleasantly surprised at the complexity of the characters and story. The authors' attention to detail richly enhances the reading experience and allows you to visualize the different worlds of light and dark in which the colorful characters move. The pace of the book draws you in and makes you want to keep reading until the end. I can't wait to see what happens to the characters in the following books. I'll definately read the next book in this saga.
It was a long, black day and somehow, as if by some miracle, I had survived - and though science would tell you that this book could not possibly have had anything to do with the fact that I am still here, I attest otherwise.
For one reason or another I traveled to that part of town, the part with a reputation that hangs over it like a pendulum. The part of town a person only goes to if they have a death wish, and I quickly became marooned, being out of my own element in a territory where my own knowledge and experiences meant nothing.
My first problem was that I ran out of gas and it was in the desert on the highway, 20 miles outside of Nowhere. My cell phone had, by no coincidence, ran out of battery power. With no way of getting in touch with civilization, without food or water or any sense of where I was or where I was headed, I walked onward.
After several miles of meandering through sandy, sweltering oblivion it had become dark - the sun wanted nothing to do with where I was headed (if only I had known!) - my march had become lethargic due to fatigue. I was famished, parched, and terrified. I hadn't seen a single car drive by, not once, and I had begun to wonder if I was still traversing reality or if I had died and was taking that long road to the afterlife.
In that moment of introspection, that moment of doubt, I heard a baying as if from the maw of some ravenous abomination. These demonaecal ululations did more than reach my ears, they tore straight into my innermost parts, trembled my soul. I began to run. The more I ran the more certain I was that whatever the source of that sound was following me, I could hear the frantic clacking of hooves accompanied by frenzied, heavy breathing. Despite my failing condition, I kept running, faster than I had ever ran before, faster than I had ever though possible.
I am not sure how it happened. Perhaps I had lost consciousness or perhaps my brain had swapped my own sentience with instinct, sparing me from the horror at my heels, but before I realized it it was light out. The sun had returned and though I was in a miserable state, the pursuing demon was no where to be found.
Ahead of me was a town.
The sun overhead was intense in heat but dim and a strange red hue not unlike blood, but still I marched, having not yet shed that last vestige of hope that ahead was salvation. Nearing the town, however, I was overcome with a sense that the worst was still lurking in waiting. Once in the town, my sense of terror was amplified. There was not a soul about, nor was there any sign of recent life or habitation whether by person or animal. There was nothing. The buildings that loomed over me from every direction stared from black, empty orifices. The streets were as vacant, trafficked only by dust and the occasional tumble-weed. I shouted for help repeatedly, but only my echo responded, mocking me.
Finally, I had lost the energy to walk. My mouth was dry to the point of bleeding, my stomach like a black-hole, siphoning the last straggling bits of my life.
That is when it happened. I turned into an alley, wanting to die outside the scornful gaze of the sun, and there stood a cloaked figure. He held in one a backpack and in it, he said, was food, water, other commodities essential to survival and my escape of this estrangement. In the other hand he held a book; I saw the titled - The Rafters. Without thinking, I greedily snatched the book from his and did not hesitate to crack it open like a safe that hid the blackest of secrets.
In it were words that made little sense, words that made me feel stranger to sense, reason, logic, and the English language. Though the words were English, it was their placement that propelled me deeper into delirium. It was as though they were arranged for the purposes of some esoteric incantation or as if they were pulled from some grimoire! Yes, that was it! These words that captivated me with a sense of the unfamiliar had been borrowed from a tome of knowledge. But the tome was known to me! Somewhere it hid in the recesses of my psyche! It was coming back to me, the answer was at my fingertips! The title started with The, of that there was no question. But The what? The Czar? Tsar? Dinosaur... saur! The saur? I then understood. These words that confounded me to the point of madness had been wrenched straight from a thesaurus! That is why their placement was so oblong, so... wrong. I looked up from the book to question the cloaked figure that gave me the book and I was dismayed. Not only was this mysterious figure gone, vanished as if water turned to vapor, but the environment had changed without notice! No longer was I estranged in some lifeless expanse of buildings, but instead I stood at the doorstep to my own home! Furthermore, my fatigue had dissipated entirely. The only constant was that I was holding the thesaurus, I mean, The Rafters.
I was actually very surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. The amount of detail in the book is great. The author does a great job at creating an atmosphere that allows you to really visualize your surroundings. Everything from the characters, the cities, and the buildings are described very well. The story is pretty intricate too since it jumps between three to four different scenerios all happening at once, but it is not overwhelming. They blend together very well though to create a story that keeps moving. The story doesn't get bland anywhere which has plagued some of the other books I have read. I was never bored. You learn something new every chapter. Overall this is an excellent introduction for a new author and I can't wait to continue on with the next book. Any fantasy reader should love this book.
The authors of this series uphold the high standard expected by fantasy readers everywhere. Characters with unusual abilities are brought to life in this in depth novel, leaving you wanting to know where the next book will take them. Each chapter brings with it new revelations which lead up to an excitingly fast paced yet profound ending.
This book will keep you reading and wanting more! The way it's written is much like that of Dan Brown's novels, an exciting and mysterious adventure with very descriptive, short chapters from different character's points of view, which makes for a quick, easy, and exciting read! The author did a great job of creating an overall depiction of each character that I felt I was right alongside each one throughout the book. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone!!
The authors of this book did a did a great job of describing unique characters and settings, which made you feel like you were right there in the book. The book takes you to places and gives you experiences that you would not get in your everyday life. The ending did a terrific job of tieing a lot of things up, but still left you with a feeling of wanting to read more!
I would recommend everyone read this book, it will take you on a new and exciting adventure that you have never experienced before!!
