Idiocy, Ltd. gathers the very best from three decades of Eric Mader’s work in the short prose form pioneered by Max Jacob, Daniil Kharms and Russell Edson. Prose poems, flash fiction, fables, brief essays and other assorted pieces that will twist your head and make you laugh aloud. . . . Two parts Kafka, one part Monty Python. Available while there are still books.
“Whether its smoking giraffes, Florida-style political rehabilitation, or the oddities of a whole cast of characters in Taipei, Eric Mader shows a sure hand in balancing satire, spoof, and twilight-zone weird, revealing hints of Kafka, Borges, and other worthies, but with a spirit all his own. With its riotous absurdity, its jarring changes of register, and its underlying critical but humane tone, Idiocy, Ltd. will make you laugh and, more important, make you think.” --Duncan Chesney, Professor of Comparative Literature, NTU, author of Silence Nowhen Late Modernism, Minimalism and Silence in the Work of Samuel Beckett
“[In Idiocy, Ltd.] we are playfully and seriously moved to open our eyes wider and our ears to hear the delight of words.” --John Poch, author of Dolls, Fix Quiet and winner of the 2014 New Criterion Poetry Prize
“Unpredictability is Mader’s stock in trade . . . an endlessly fascinating eccentric . . . everything he puts his hand to is very well worth reading.” --Bradley Winterton

This was as fun and interesting a book as any I have read recently. The prose in which it is written is very unique and with all of the different stories, it was like several books in one. The author is very talented and this book made me laugh...a lot. In all honesty, this was a great book and I highly recommend it.Product details

Idiocy Ltd Eric Mader 9781511859455 Books Reviews
This is a great book witty, substantial and engaging. At once you will find yourself laughing, scratching your head and weeping uncontrollably. That's the nature of the work. The deadpan humor is very appealing, too. A wonderful book, and worthy of 5 stars!
Can the book review be considered a type of prose poem?
I was pondering this question when I sat down to review Eric Mader’s Idiocy, Ltd as the book itself has raised several questions and reassessments in my mind about what is to be considered poetry and what is considered prose.
Previously
I thought that
Prose Poems
Were something like this
The pathetic style
Of
Modern “Poets”
Who are merely just typing words
Without rhyme or metre
Then separating it into different
Lines
And calling it
A poem
The modern world is full of these so-called “poets” who seem to have never heard of iambic pentameter and who often espouse the feeble argument that any respect to rhythm, grammar or even spelling is some fascist attempt to constrain their boundless creativity. These typists (for that is what they are) fill the ranks of those emotional masturbators who typify the “poor souls who are too incurious, dull-witted or idle to find out what poetry can be” as Stephen Fry accurately describes them.
So it was with surprise and delight that this book of prose poetry by Eric Mader opened my eyes to how the medium can be better handled in the hands of somebody who has not only studied the form but has the necessary learning and worldliness to fill his poetry with interesting content.
I have read relatively little prose poetry; perhaps the closest equivalent to Mader’s writing that I have personally read so far would be the type of eccentric little pieces that Spike Milligan used to pen, in his book The Little Pot Boiler for example. Idiocy, Ltd takes a much more obscure (to English-speaking audiences at least) writer as its main inspiration the French author Max Jacob. In an interview with Mader, he describes his preference for the prose poem in the following words
“… the prose poem has a kind of explosive quality it offers an approach that allows one to, as it were, infect the common genres of language everything from spy novel to advertisement to nature documentary. The prose poem is often a matter of taking up the style of one or another of these, their verbal tics, and bending the language in an absurdist direction. And so it’s often satirical. But one may also move in a more meditative or literary direction, and unveil something new about language, how language works. The prose poem for me is playful and meditative at the same time.”
Reading the pieces contained within Idiocy, Ltd, I’d have to absolutely agree with the above. The pieces are generally short mostly one or two pages but with a few extending to about ten pages. The content is also as vast as it is deep. It is hard to detect a general theme within Idiocy, Ltd (though the author says that his theme is “idiocy” in the original Greek meaning of the word, as in one’s own private thoughts and babblings), but this is also one of the book’s chief delights. We get a range of pieces that discuss life on Noah’s Ark, the private thoughts of animals, life in the hectic streets of Taipei, the prevalence of Mormons in the CIA, and a boy who can remove his own skull. My own two favourite pieces couldn’t be more different. One, “Making the Grade in Naples, Florida”, is a satirical look at life in a middle-class and middle-brow gated community taken to ridiculous extremes, the other – “Cats Unspeakably Evil Pseudo-Animals from Outer Space” is a witty mock-polemic against cats which reminded me of the kind of essay Orwell would pen during his lighter moods.
The reader won’t “get” all of the references that are covered in a book like Idiocy, Ltd, however it would be impossible to do so since some of the pieces are clearly rooted in the author’s personal experiences. Nevertheless, it doesn’t detract from the quality of the writing and I found myself enjoying Mader’s style and flow even when I wasn’t completely sure what he was trying to say. In this respect, Idiocy Ltd is not only an intellectually stimulating book that encourages the reader to follow up on some of the references and broaden their own mind, but also just an enjoyable ride in itself.
Both Idiocy, Ltd and the author’s previous book A Taipei Mutt were well-written and a pleasure to read, though they couldn’t be more different in style. My advice would be to buy both books so that you can really see the full range of what this intriguing author has to offer.
This was as fun and interesting a book as any I have read recently. The prose in which it is written is very unique and with all of the different stories, it was like several books in one.
